Yahoo to Acquire Overture to "Monetize" Search
Yahoo announced Monday it will acquire Overture, a leading provider of commercial search. Yahoo CEO Terry Semel said, "By combining Overture's world class monetization platform and complementary web search assets, with Yahoo!'s already robust search business, we will further improve our ability to offer the highest quality search experience." Expect Yahoo to integrate contextual advertising throughout its site and to expand pay-for-performance search into vertical properties, such as shopping, travel and yellow pages. The companies also hope that Overture's 88,000 advertisers, the majority of which are small- and medium-sized businesses, will purchase a range of additional Yahoo services such as Yahoo! Store and Yahoo! Web Hosting.

Overture Launches Content Match on MSN.com
Overture launched "Content Match" on Microsoft's MSN.com. The system is meant to make advertising more relevant to the rest of the information on a Web page. Somebody reading a story about cars on MSN might see a nearby Web link of auto dealership seeking potential customers. Overture's fiercest rival, search engine leader Google, introduced a similar contextual ad program three months ago.
